The first wave of AI character apps did something important. It proved that millions of people wanted to talk to fictional characters — not as a gimmick, but as a daily habit. Writers tested how their antagonists would respond to a moral dilemma. Language learners wanted a patient native speaker who would stay in character through three hundred messages of broken grammar. Roleplayers wanted somewhere to push a scene further than a human partner had time for. The four walls

The first wall was forgetting. Persistent memory was the second piece. As you and a character talk, a separate process reads the conversation and extracts facts — concrete, useful, specific. Your name. Where you live. The mechanism

When you have a conversation with a character on Talaforge, two things are happening in parallel. The first is the obvious one: you send a message, the character replies, you send another. The second is invisible to you in the moment but consequential over time: a separate process is reading what you both say and extracting facts.

A fact, in this system, is a small, concrete piece of information that's worth keeping. Your name. Your job. Where you live, if you mentioned it. A detail about your day. A piece of canon you established about the character themselves — they're left-handed, they grew up in a small town, they have a complicated relationship with their sister. The extraction is conservative. It picks up things that are specific and useful, and it ignores things that are vague or transient.

Scoping

These facts get stored in a memory file attached to that specific character, in that specific topic, for your account. The scoping matters. The same character chatted to by two different users has two different memories. The same character in two different topics has two different memories. Memory is per-character per-topic per-user. It does not leak across.

When you come back to that character — minutes later, or weeks later — those facts are injected into the character's context before they see your new message. The character begins the conversation already knowing what you've established together. They don't reconstruct you from scratch. They don't ask your name again. They don't forget that you'd told them you were nervous about an interview last week, and they might ask how it went.

Control surface

You can open a character's memory at any time and see exactly what they remember. Every fact is listed. You can edit a fact — if the extractor got something wrong, or if you've changed your mind about a piece of canon, or if a roleplay direction shifted, you can rewrite it directly. You can delete individual facts. You can clear the whole memory and start the relationship fresh. Nothing about your memory is hidden from you.

Why does this matter? Two reasons, one obvious and one less so. The obvious reason is continuity. Long-running interactions with a character depend on the character being a stable entity that knows you over time. Without memory, every conversation is a polite first date. The less obvious reason is intimacy without surveillance. A platform that remembers everything about you and gives you no insight into what it remembers is a platform you can't trust with anything sensitive. Claude Opus is what you reach for when subtext matters. Google Gemma — for fast banter

Google Gemma is the choice for quick exchanges. Short replies, comedic timing, fast turn-taking, scenes where momentum matters more than depth. The trade-off is that very long scenes with complex internal psychology can drift; Opus is the better choice for those.

DeepSeek — for the long arc

DeepSeek handles long-context narrative continuity well. Multi-day roleplays where the same character has been with you for weeks, scenes that hinge on something said a hundred messages ago, threads that need the model to track a tangled web of established canon — DeepSeek's longer-context handling shows up. The router picks per package, per scene. The user picks a package, the router picks the underlying card from the available pool based on capacity, latency, and historical reliability. What happens if I edit or regenerate a reply — does the character forget?

No. Regenerate gives you another version of just that reply; nothing earlier or later is disturbed. Edit replaces the text without touching memory. Branching forks the conversation at any point — both versions live in parallel and you can switch between them.

A branch is a divergence point in the conversation. From any character reply you can fork the scene; the original thread continues to exist untouched and the new branch goes wherever you take it. You can fork again from inside any branch. The conversation becomes a tree, not a line.

Glossary

Persona
The character's identity layer — name, voice, attitude, history, mannerisms. The persona is what the AI is asked to embody on every reply.
System prompt
The hidden instruction block the model receives before generating any reply. On Talaforge it includes the character's persona, the active scene rules, and the persistent memory snippet for this user.
Character card
A portable bundle of persona, opening message, default model and sampling parameters. Talaforge supports importing several community-standard card formats.
Token
The atomic unit a language model reads and writes. Roughly 4 characters of English text per token. Models have a maximum number of tokens they can consider at once.
Context window
The maximum amount of text a model can hold "in mind" for a single reply. Bigger windows let the model reference more of the recent conversation but cost more per call.
Persistent memory
Facts a character remembers about you across sessions. Distinct from the context window: memory is curated, editable, and injected into context on every reply. On Talaforge memory is per-character per-topic per-user and fully visible to you.
Branch (fork)
A divergence point in the conversation. Forking from a character reply creates an alternative thread that grows in parallel with the original; both are kept.
Regenerate
Asking for another version of the last reply without disturbing anything else. The character is given the same context and produces a new answer.
Model router
Infrastructure that picks an AI model for a given scene from a pool of available cards and fails over silently if one degrades. Includes weighted balancers and circuit-breakers.
Failover / circuit breaker
The router cuts off a degraded provider before it can poison a conversation with timeouts or refusals, and routes traffic to a healthy card instead.
